Schott Solar announces further job cuts

Following its exit from the crystalline silicon photovoltaic module and wafer business, Schott Solar AG has announced further job cuts.

A further 38 employees at Schott Solar will be laid off.

The Germany-based company will lay off 38 of the 60 employees working at its Jena technology center at the end of October. The news follows Schott’s decision to close production of crystalline silicon photovoltaic products down.

The goal is to find a socially-acceptable solution and to refrain from layoffs, said spokesman, Klaus-Bernhard Hofmann. The remaining employees at the technology center, which opened at the start of the year, will focus on new applications in the future, in particular, on production and processing technologies for raw materials. 

In addition to the closure of its crystalline photovoltaic production, Schott Solar has closed its wafer manufacturing facility in Germany’s Jena and discontinued solar cell production.

The production of thin film photovoltaic modules should continue in Jena and is unaffected by the decision, added Hofmann.
