Canada: 100 jobs to be created under new 20 MW solar PV project

The news comes following an agreement between Macquarie Power & Infrastructure Income Fund (MPT) and SunPower Corp.

The Amherstburg Solar Park is scheduled to start construction immediately, with commercial operations beginning next June. It is hoped around 37,600 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity will be produced annually; enough to power around 4,000 homes, says MPT.

"The Amherstburg Solar Park is an excellent addition to MPT’s existing portfolio of low-risk, stable power infrastructure assets. It also offers important environmental and local economic benefits while supporting the Province of Ontario’s green energy mandate," said Michael Bernstein, president and chief executive officer of MPT.

SunPower will complete the Amherstburg Solar Park under a fixed-price engineering, procurement and construction contract. It will also provide operations and maintenance services for the facility under a 20-year contract. Electricity generated by the facility will be sold under the Province of Ontario’s Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program to the Ontario Power Authority at a guaranteed price of $420 per MWh for the next 20 years.

Meanwhile, in what has been a busy period for SunPower, the company has also announced that it will supply the Casino Group with an additional 20 MW of solar PV panels for solar power installations on Casino Group properties in mainland France.

The agreement, which builds on a similar 15 MW agreement between the two companies last year, will enable the Casino Group to turn under-utilized roof space and parking area into power plants to produce renewable electricity and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
