80 MW Ukraine PV project unveiled

Austria-based Activ Solar has announced the construction of an 80 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic project in the Ukraine. When complete, it will be one of the largest of its kind worldwide.

The project, which has been divided into four 20 MW phases, is located in Ohotnikovo, Crimera.

The first two phases have already been constructed: the first was grid connected in July, while the second is expected to be commissioned in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, Activ says that it expects the final two phases to be completed this year.

When finished, the project will be spread across 160 acres and will comprise around 360,000 photovoltaic modules. It is expected to generate around 100,000 MW hours of energy annually, which should be enough to supply 20,000 households.

"A project of this magnitude marks a turning point in the development of solar power in Europe and should confirm Ukraine’s position as an upcoming renewable energy provider," commented Kaveh Ertefai, CEO of Activ Solar.

He added that the company is able to install around one MW per day.

While Activ would not disclose which companies are supplying the components for the project, a spokesperson did tell pv magazine that both German and Asian parties are involved. Activ also remained tight lipped over the investment amount.

When asked if the company had further plans to install in the Ukraine, the spokesperson replied, "We completed our first 7.5 MW solar park in Rodnikovoye end of 2010 and it was connected to the grid in spring 2011. We already started construction of another large scale project and several other projects in the Ukraine are in the planning phase."
