U.S. developer 8minutenergy has signed a 25-year PPA to sell 100 MW of solar power to the Southern California Public Power Authority (SCPPA).

The clean energy will come from 8minute's Springbok Solar Farm, 70 miles north of Kern County, California, with construction set to start in the first quarter of the new year, according to a press release published on the developer's website on Thursday.

The Springbok project, which will sell the power to the SCPPA's Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), is set to be operational by June 2016 and the developer says construction will provide 300 direct and 400 indirect jobs, including to former LA gang members who have graduated from the Homeboy Industries training program.

The 950-acre site is being developed by 8minute subisidiary 62SK 8me and will supply energy for households in LA.

The LADWP has a target of generating 33% of the megacity's energy needs from renewables by 2020.
