Africa‘s largest self-sufficient microgrid is under construction in Equatorial Guinea, according to a press release issued by the power management business of Eaton Corporation.
Irish-headquartered U.S. multinational Eaton announced yesterday (Thursday) it will be supplying switchgear assemblies, circuit protection devices and power transformers for the 5 MW microgrid in Annobon Province, an island off the central west African nation which will be the focus of the world's media when it hosts the African Nations Cup football tournament next month.
The project is being developed by Pennsylvania-based consultants MAECI Solar and Delaware-based project developer Wise Power Systems International.
The Annobon Electrification Project is being developed as part of Equatorial Guinea's national economic development plan, Horizon 2020.
The residents of Annobon currently spend 15-20% of their income to pay for supplementary power on top of that provided by generators for five hours daily and the micro grid project is intended to remove the expense by providing constant power.
