The Indian state of Andhra Pradesh looks set to make a major push for more renewable energy, including setting a 5 GW solar target by 2019.

According to the The Hindu Business Line, which cites Andhra Pradesh energy secretary Ajay Jain, the state government is eager to transform the state into "a solar power generation hub, providing all necessary support through a new solar policy to be announced soon."

The state government is expected to unveil plans in the comming weeks that would facilitate the installation of approximately 5 GW solar power and 4 GW of wind generation capacity by 2019.

The Hindu Business Line reports that number of major projects in the state are already in the works, including a planned 1 GW solar park to be built by national power utility NTPC. NTPC subsidiary NVVN is likewise backing a 1 GW solar project, with another 500 MW project set up by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), which has already opened for bids.

Last year the state government launched a series of tenders to set up 1.16 GW of solar power capacity across the state. Despite a strong response, the division of the state earlier this year, which resulted in the formation of the new state of Telangana, appears to have those projects in limbo.

Indian electronics news portal EFYTimes reports that since the state's division, both Andhra Pradesh and Telanganathe have been afflicted by power supply shortages and demand for the central government's assistance has been increasing. At the same time, both states are now competing against one another for infrastructure projects and investment opportunities.
