The completion of the Paloma Solar Power plant – the first project to be realized under the program – was announced by the Arizona Public Service Co. (APS) and First Solar.

According to a statement released by First Solar, the plant is comprised of 275,000 thin-film photovoltaic panels mounted on fixed-tilt steel supports. The plant was said to have created 300 jobs, and represent the first thin film project for APS.

The second photovoltaic facility, the Cotton Center Solar Plant, was developed by Solon Corporation and McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. It is comprised of 75,168 photovoltaic panels.

The Hyder Solar Plant, also worth 17 MW and currently being developed by SunEdison, is expected to be online in the fourth quarter of the year, thus representing the completion of the AZ Sun Program's third facility.

Overall, APS is looking to develop 100 MW of photovoltaics in Arizona under the first phase of the AZ Sun Program.

While third parties will develop and construct the projects, APS will own and operate them. The four-year program is expected to have 100 MW online by 2014 and create more than 1,000 Arizona construction jobs.
