Avancis acquired by China's CNBM

Like a number of other middle-sized thin film players, Germany’s Avancis was caught expanding its manufacturing capacity right at the time that module oversupply hit the PV market, and c-Si module prices went through he floor. On the back of that the company, which was backed by glass giant Saint Gobain, went very quite and production was shuttered.

That production looks set to restart, after the finalization of its acquisition by the China National Building Materials Group Corporation (CNBM). Avancis is now wholly owned by the firm and will headed by Franz Karg as CEO and Oliver Just as CFO. The company will continue to operate under the Avancis name.

pv magazine understands that Avancis has secured a CTO to oversee the tricky job of restarting the company’s 100 MW production in Torgau. Avancis had previously changed one its fabs into a research and innovation center.

That Avancis will be brought into a construction supplies company, indicates that BIPV will be a major focus for the firm. Avancis’ all-black PowerMax SMART modules are well suited for BIPV applications, although the firm says it will also supply ground mount applications.

Avancis product guarantees are unchanged for new and existing customers.
