Azure Power, the Indian independent solar power producer, this week began construction of a 100 MW solar PV plant in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
The company secured the rights to develop the installation under a recent auction by NTPC, the government-backed power utility, under the terms of the National Solar Mission (NSM). The development is part of a wider program to build 1 GW of solar PV capacity in the region as part of the Kurnool Ultra Mega Solar Park.
Andhra Pradesh Solar Power Corporation Limited (APSPCL) and Solar Park Implementation Agency (SPIA) are actors in the development of this solar project, which will enjoy a tariff of INR 5.12/kWh ($0.077/kWh) via a 25-year PPA with NTPC. Completion is penciled in for the second quarter of next year.
"We have over 200 MW portfolio with proven track record of operating solar power projects in Andhra Pradesh," said Azure Power CEO and founder Inderpreet Wadwha. "With the commencement of the construction of this 100 MW project, we are delighted to make a contribution towards realization of our Hon’ble Prime Minister’s commitment towards clean and green energy, through solar power generation."
The plant will add to Azure’s growing solar PV portfolio, which has now surpassed 1 GW in India. The tariff, while attractive, is somewhat higher than recent solar power prices in India, which dipped to a new low this week after Amplus Energy Solutions secured a rate of INR 3/kWh ($0.04/kWh) for 14.5 MW of rooftop solar projects in Uttarkhand, Himachal Pradesh and Puducherry.
The arrays are to be installed atop NGOs, educational institutes, hospitals and additional non-profit organizations.
