Azure Power added to its growing solar portfolio in India on Friday, with the inauguration of a 28 MW PV plant in the state of Punjab. It was a landmark day for the company, as after the inauguration ceremony at the plant it was over to another site in the state, where the first foundation stone of a 150 MW plant was laid, by the Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, Sardar Sukhbir Singh Badal.

The 28 MW plant in Killianwali Village of Muktsar district, was commissioned in just 10 months after the signing of the power purchase agreement, making it a record-breaker in terms of speed. It was a proud event for Azure Power, with Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, Sardar Sukhbir Singh Badal, making it to the ceremony.

“We are delighted to make this contribution towards realization of our Honorable Prime Minister’s commitment towards clean and green energy, through solar power generation,” said Azure Power Founder and CEO Inderpreet Wadhwa. “Our sincere gratitude to the Honorable Deputy Chief Minister and the State of Punjab, for all the cooperation and support extended.”

The support that Wadhwa was referring to was the introduction of various solar policies under the Punjab Energy Department Agency, which has helped the company to realize these projects, and to become the largest owner and operator of solar power plants in Punjab. It now has a total solar portfolio of 225 MW in Punjab.

And it has plans to add more, starting with the 150 MW PV plant, which will be in nearby village of Vanvala. The foundation stone for this plant was laid on Friday, by Badal, who commented, “It is to the credit of developers like Azure Power that Punjab has succeeded in being a front-runner in solar generation. Azure Power’s contribution will be instrumental in achieving the State’s renewable energy generation targets.”

The two plants are going to be used to meet the energy demands of the surrounding area. Combined, the two have had INR 1,000 (US$149.25 million) invested in them, and they shall generate around 1,000 jobs for local workers.
