Brazil will for the first time open its A-3 Energy Auction to solar projects.

Mauricio Tolmasquim, president and CEO of Brazil’s Energy Research Company (EPE) – part of the Ministry of Mines and Energy – has said the country’s A-3 Energy Auction in October would be open to solar and waste-to-energy projects for the first time.

Winning projects are expected to be in operation by 2016.

Brazil's renewable sector has long awaited the opening of specific auctions for solar, but that may not happen until 2014. Renova Energia, which has the largest wind power projects in the country, has said the opening of specific solar auctions would boost the Brazil’s fledgling industry.

For now, however, solar will have to compete in the tender with other technologies.

Brazil's high irradiation levels make it an ideal region for PV projects and PV installations, both large-scale and distributed PV generation are on the rise.

In May, Brazil's Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL) announced that it had received more than a dozen requests for regulatory authorization to develop and operate PV plants with a total of 392.4 MW of capacity.
