Central Europe smart grid market worth $10.3 billion by 202309. April 2013 | Global PV markets, Industry & Suppliers, Markets & Trends, Energy storage | By: Max Hall
The smart grid market in central and eastern Europe (CEE) will be worth a cumulative $10.3 billion by 2023, according to a report by market research group Northeast Group LLC.
The report's authors predict almost all utilities in the region will have rolled out smart grids to all of their customers at that point thanks to a combination of EU legislation, distribution loss mitigation, energy conscious consumers and the need to incorporate an increasing share of renewables electricity generation.
The Central and Eastern Europe Smart Grid: Market Forecast (2013-23) report looks in depth at ten countries in the region, which a Northeast Group spokesman describes as "the most advanced region among emerging market countries for smart grid and smart meter deployments".
Estonia has already announced an ambition to complete full roll-out of smart meters by 2017 and Bulgaria, Poland, Romania and Slovenian utilities are also targeting 100% coverage.
The EU requires member states to have at least 80% smart meter coverage by 2020 'if economically feasible' although most of the 10 countries in the Northeast Group study failed to perform the EU requirement of completing a cost-benefit analysis of smart metering by the September 2012 deadline. The other countries exmained in detail are the Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia.
The report's authors note all the countries which did conduct the analysis found a positive result for smart metering and forecast tougher EU regulation regarding mandatory smart metering targets by 2015.
The report also considers the smart meter market in Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia and the market is broken into the five sub sections of: meter hardware; communications; IT; professional services; and installation costs.
