Chile: Solarpack to build 25 MW PV project

Spain-based Solarpack has won a contract to build, develop and manage two photovoltaic plants worth 25 MW in the Tarapacá region of Chile.

The company was awarded the contract by mining company, Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi. According to a statement released, construction on the two plants will begin late this year and should be complete in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Solarpack and Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi have also said they will set up a research and development (R&D) center in Puerto de Collahuasi, Primera Región, in order to test different "cutting-edge" photovoltaic technologies under real use conditions.

"In addition, Collahuasi has the right of first refusal for the purchase of power from the project which Solarpack has in the pipeline in Primera Región, Chile," added Solarpack in the statement.

Activity in the Chilean solar market is heating up. Both Sky Solar and Element Solar Power have unveiled their 300 MW photovoltaic plans, and recently, Solarpack announced the completion of a one MW project – one of the country's largest.
