Chinese solar module and cell manufacturer China Sunergy is set to start production in Turkey this month with a 150 MW module production line at its new plant in Istanbul's Trade Free Zone, developed with domestic manufacturer Seul Energy Investment Corp.

China Sunergy is set to begin manufacturing cells and modules - and developing solar projects - in Turkey.

A planned 100 MW line for manufacturing cells is expected to come online in March and, if successful, China Sunergy is planning to ship a further 200 MW of equipment from Shanghai to Istanbul by March, subject to "market dynamics" and the progress of the Turkish facility, according to a press release from CSUN Eurasia, one of three companies created by China Sunergy and Seul in September.

The 22,000 sq m facility – which is expected to create more than 1,200 local jobs – will make Turkey China Sunergy's second largest manufacturing base, after the company's homeland, and will sell modules and cells to clients in Europe and the U.S.

CSUN Eurasia will also invest in downstream projects in Turkey and neighbouring countries and China Sunergy has announced an interest in investing in nearby projects with a second domestic provider – Akfel Group – although in July the Chinese manufacturer abandoned plans for a Turkish manufacturing plant with the latter.

Stephen Cai, CEO of China Sunergy, said: "We are delighted to see our facilities in Turkey established and ready for production. Solar projects in Turkey enjoy higher feed in tariffs when adopting locally manufactured cells and modules. Therefore, we believe our co-operation with the strong local partner SEUL Energy will help us capture substantial market share in the region."
