Located in Shenzhen, the facility will initially focus on building the company’s PV1200 platform, a full metallization solution for solar cell production, with a production capacity of 1,200 wafers per hour.

Responding to questions from pv magazine, the company declined to comment on initial solar cell production capacity expectations, as well as how much was invested in the project and how many jobs are expected to be created. However, a spokesperson did say: "China manufacturing for some modules of DEK Solar’s PV equipment began last quarter and the production roadmap shows expansion of the facility and its capacity throughout 2011 to meet increasing demand for the company’s scalable high-throughput metallization platforms."

Additionally, in a statement, DEK chairman John Knowles stated: "The introduction of a DEK Solar manufacturing presence in China is extremely good news for our customers in Asia. Moving production closer to them, customers can now expect even shorter lead times, already a major competitive differentiator for our team. This model is based on the success we’ve enjoyed with our SMT business in the region, where keeping manufacturing close to our customers worldwide has been an important strategy."

The company added that the new manufacturing capacity in China will evolve in line with customer demand, with further expansion scheduled for this year and in the future.
