An initiative aimed at improving Dubai’s ability to develop clean energy projects has been created via a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between German utility RWE Energy Group and the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).

Both signatories of the MoU will seek to improve cooperation in R&D, innovation and development of clean energy projects and smart grids, as well as further partnerships on scientific research and sustainable development projects.

The ultimate aim, according to DEWA, is to make Dubai a "smarter" city, and forms part of DEWA’s commitment to support the Smart Dubai Initiative, which was launched by the emirate’s prime minister, Skeikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

RWE will bring its expertise to bear across a range of R&D projects and innovations, including energy storage, improving the performance and reliability of solar cells, testing smart grids and supporting academic advancement in the field of renewable energy.

An additional portion of the MoU will be to provide greater support for Dewa to promote and establish innovation in the global energy market. According to RWE Consulting CEO Klaus Grellmann, the German utility intends to "set an innovative role model" in the region for the sustainable development and ease of connective clean energy sources with existing grids.

"DEWA is committed to enhancing cooperation with local and international government and private organizations to improve its services for customers, and develop its operations to the highest levels of availability, reliability and efficiency," added DEWA CEO Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer.
