Duke Energy has signed 20-year agreements with three solar developers to purchase up to 20 MW of solar power for its Indiana customers in four communities.
The company has filed a request with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to approve the agreements.
Pending regulatory approval, the developers — Missouri's Solexus Development and North Carolina firm Strata Solar, Indiana-based Inovateus Solar, and the Colorado-based division of Germany's Juwi Solar — will build and operate four solar panel projects, each producing up to 5 MW of electric power.
The projects include:
- Pastime Farm LLC in Clay County and McDonald Solar LLC in Vigo County, developed by Solexus Development and Strata Solar
- Geres Energy LLC in Howard County, developed by Inovateus Solar
- Sullivan Solar LLC in Sullivan County, developed by Juwi Solar
A fourth project will be built in Clay County. Duke expects the projects in Clay, Howard and Vigo counties to begin providing electricity by the end of 2015. The Sullivan County project is expected to provide power by March 2016.
"These projects will help us develop emission-free solar power resources, while expanding and diversifying our generation portfolio," said Doug Esamann, president of Duke Energy Indiana.
The projects are a result of a request for proposals issued by Duke Energy Indiana in February 2014 for developers interested in supplying the company with solar energy.
Duke Energy Indiana's operations provide about 7,500 MW of owned electric capacity to approximately 800,000 customers in a 23,000-square-mile (59,570-square-kilomter) service area, making it the state's biggest electricity supplier.
Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, Duke Energy is the largest electric power holding company in the United States with some 7.2 million customers across six U.S. states, including Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Florida and Indiana.
