The Chilean subsidiary of Italian clean energy giant Enel Green Power last week completed and connected a 79 MW solar power plant in Chile.
Enel Green Power Chile (EGPC) brought the Pampa Norte solar farm online on April 6, bringing to a close the $150 million project and beginning a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Chiles Central Region Interconnected System, the local power utility for the Antofagasta Region of Chile.
The solar plant is expected to maximize the exceptional levels of solar irradiation in the region, which means the installation could generate in excess of 200 GWh of solar electricity each year, which would be enough power to meet the energy needs of 100,000 local households.
The site covers 290 hectares and utilizes some 258,000 polycrystalline silicon PV modules. For EGPC, this latest addition boosts its Chilean clean energy portfolio to 700 MW, of which 253 MW is derived from solar PV. The company currently has a further 500 MW of renewable energy projects under construction across Chile.
Collectively, Enel Green Power has slightly more than 500 MW of solar PV installed globally, and has begun plowing greater resources into both the industry and its leading emerging markets, not least South Africa and India, where the company is eyeing more than 500 MW of additional solar projects.
