Enel takes quarter of capacity in Brazil's solar auction

Share

Enel Green Power has announced that it has been awarded 344 MW of wind and solar PV projects in Brazil's auction for reserve power held last Friday.

This includes a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for the 254 MW Ituverava PV project, which Enel plans to build in the state of Bahia. pv magazine was unable to reach Enel by press time to learn if this would be one large, single-site plant or a series of smaller plants.

While Brazil currently has few utility-scale PV plants, new projects are usually not planned to be larger than 30 MW, as this is the limit for a discount on grid-use and connection charges.

The company was also awarded a 90 MW wind project, which will also be built in Bahia. Together the two projects will represent an investment of $600 million.

Brazil awarded PPAs for 31 PV projects representing 890 MW in its auction for reserve power held on October 31. This auction was the first time that Brazil has held a national auction with a tranche specifically for solar projects.

Enel is an established player in Latin American solar markets. The company began construction of a 36 MW PV plant in Chile in November 2013, followed by another two plants representing 100 MW in May 2014.
