The new office complex will be the first energy-neutral building on the African continent according to UNEP. Project leader Bernd Wolff stated that as a comparison, the energy supply at the new UNEP premises will meet the needs of over 150 European households. Cologne-based Energiebau Solarstromsysteme's construction will encompass a 515 kilowatts peak total output. The building will be completed by the end of this year.
The new UNEP office, with its 1,000 people will already be in operation when the Environment Ministers of all the world nations meet in Nairobi in February 2011. The solar system on the rooftop will provide the exact amount of energy required for building operations over the course of one year.
