Fronius and Sunrun hop aboard Tesla juggernaut

Two leading U.S. solar companies have announced early-adopter partnerships with Tesla’s new Powerwall home storage system, which was unveiled last week at the company’s California HQ by CEO and tech entrepreneur Elon Musk.

U.S. inverter specialist Fronius will collaborate with Tesla from the fourth quarter of the year, bundling its Symo Hybrid inverter with the Tesla Powerwall home battery to customers in Germany initially, before rolling out the package to the rest of Europe and Australia.

Fronius will offer the Tesla technology as an alternative to its own Fronius solar battery, making both types of storage system compatible with the inverter and smart meter, and building upon previous successful partnerships between the two companies. Tesla’s Model S and Model X vehicles are both welded using Fronius technology.

"As a global leader in the field of E-mobility, Tesla is a welcome partner on our path towards 24 hours of sun," said Fronius head of solar energy division, Martin Hackl. "Through this, we are coming one step closer to our vision of reliable energy supply in the future achieved with 100% renewable energy."

Sunrun offers welcome embrace

Tesla’s new home battery system will also be offered as part of AEE Solar’s home PV system. The U.S. distributor of residential solar is a subsidiary of Sunrun, which is one of the leading dedicated residential solar companies in the country, offering solar-as-a-service to American homeowners.

The collaboration wills see AEE solar add Tesla’s Powerwall to its growing line of storage options for PV customers, rounding out its home energy service to cover everything from generation to smart storage and management.

"We believe the next evolution of solar as a service is home solar paired with storage, and we look forward to adding Tesla and its new energy storage for consumers to our extensive line of battery options," said Sunrun COO Paul Winnowski. "This partnership builds upon Sunrun’s approach to grow consumer adoption of home solar through a variety of channels and partners."

Winnowski added that Sunrun’s deep experience in the area of residential home solar should help to transform the solar-plus-energy storage market, making a mainstream service that more consumers across the country can adopt.

As expected, the Tesla Powerwall will also be offered to SolarCity customers requiring an energy storage solution alongside their rooftop solar PV systems.
