Gehrlicher unveils plans for southern Spain

Gehrlicher has told pv magazine that installation work on the first of the projects will begin within the next two years. Smaller Gehrlicher projects in Murcia are largely rooftop projects between 20 kilowatts (kW) and 100 kW in size. The company believes these projects will become more prevalent, "due to the upcoming photovoltaic self-consumption regulation in Spain."

"We believe that grid parity will soon become a reality in the south of Spain and are currently doing a great effort to prepare for these market possibilities." As such, Gehlicher has said it is building logistical capability and hiring employees.

While details for the major projects are scarce, the company has created an investment package aimed at developing a range of projects in the Murcia region. In 2011, Gehlicher developed five projects in Murcia with a combined output of 12 MW. In Spain in total, it has installed 23 MW of solar, predominantly ground-mounted plants.

The German integrator has had a engagement with the Murcia region for over a decade and has told pv magazine that it wishes to consolidate its position in the region with a gradual increase in the level of investment there.

Gehlicher has no particular module supplier contract to fulfill these regional projects, but is currently working on this.

While announcing the Marcia plans, the head of the company's Spanish branch added that Gehrlicher is beginning its expansion into South America. At present, it is active in Brazil, including the first soccer stadium installation in Latin America worth 403 kilowatts. The next market being targeted is Chile, and Gehlicher hopes to open a subsidiary there within the next months.
