GEI Global seeking solar partner for major Tanzanian project

Michigan-based GEI Global Energy Corp. is looking to partner with an international solar company on a suite of 15 MW to 45 MW projects with the government of Tanzania.

The group, whose core business is fuel cell electrical power generation, said Monday that it had spent 18 months developing the planned Tanzania project with worldwide partners, although details of the lofty plan remained scarce.

“GEI Global and its partners have a bold vision for electrifying a continent where 24% of the country's population has access to electricity and only 11% in rural areas, and getting there by skipping carbon-intensive growth in favor of renewable energy,” the company said.

GEI Global is partnering with the Tanzania Rural Energy Corporation (TREC), Transcend Enterprises Limited and the non-profit Africa Community Advancement Initiative. The company is now seeking “a global minded solar energy partner to provide one component of a large bold initiative that will resolve a primary challenge that has restricted access to affordable plentiful energy for decades.”

The ambitious project will also result “in guaranteed and long-term revenues,” the company added.

The plan is part of TREC’s 360 Degrees Energy Deployment and Economic Development solution, which GEI Global describes as “a merger of technologies” that has “solved the primary set of constraints to improving the economic viability for a people, and provides a strategy to ensure a sustainable energy solution from one generation to the next.”

GEI Global pointed out that Tanzania, the largest country in East Africa, “is endowed with abundant natural resources, including river basins and forests, but it is experiencing vulnerability to climate change and extreme weather events. Droughts have recently affected the country and undermined its hydroelectric capacity.”

The company added that development of a secure energy infrastructure “is one pillar of the Tanzania's Vision 2025 mandate. Energy is a constraint for sustainable development in the country, and thereby hindering the private sector economic growth.”

GEI Global describes itself as an emerging public company that “leverages a menu of novel and innovative technologies including battery energy storage, hybrid solar systems and fuel cell electric power generation with natural gas, hydrogen and methane and other renewable energy sources.” The company says its product line is designed to be “scalable from a few kilowatts to several hundred 100 kW for green hybrid integrated fuel cell/solar power plants around the world.”

GEI Global announced in April that it would explore opportunities in the solar energy application space, including acquisitions and new relationships.
