Knowledge sharing and joint R&D activity will form part of an international collaboration between a German solar energy research organization and counterparts at a Saudi university.

Under the terms of a memorandum of understanding signed at a recent solar conference, the Stuttgart-based Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden Württemberg (ZSW) and the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia, will work together to advance the performance of thin film solar cells in desert conditions.

The five-year agreement will include student and scientist exchange programs; sharing of knowledge, publications, techniques and practical applications; and joint events and R&D activity.

In return, the arrangement will help open up the Saudi and wider MENA solar market to European companies.

The co-operation agreement was signed at a solar conference held to mark the opening of KAUST's Solar and Photovoltaic Engineering Research Center (SPERC).

The desert kingdom has outlined plans to install 16 GW of renewable energy generation by 2030 under its ambitious Renewable Energy Program.
