Germany: 4373.5 MW installed in first half

The German Federal Network Agency has announced that in June alone this year, about 1.8 GW of new PV capacity was added to the grid. Reasons may have been the EEG discussions and the expiry dates for transition periods for larger systems.

More than four GW of photovoltaics were installed in the first half of 2012.

The agency has released the numbers for photovoltaic installations for the first half of 2012. It states that in Germany, a total capacity of 4,373.5 MW have been added. This is the highest ever for a first half.

In June alone, 14,740 installations totalling 1,790.21 MW of PV capacity was registered. This is still slightly below the record levels of June 2010, which hit 2,100 MW.

In May, according to the agency, some 8,500 new PV installations with a total capacity of 254.23 MW were reported. In March, already 1,222.77 MW were newly installed, as figures show.

The latest statistics in July show that photovoltaic contribution to electricity needs in the country grew 47 percent in the first half of the year. Solar photovoltaic contribution grew from 3.6 to 5.3 percent in this period. Meanwhile, in May, photovoltaics accounted for approximately ten percent of Germany's energy supply, according to the Federal Association of Energy and Water (BDEW).
