The new facility, the SolarFactory III, is located in Freiburg, Saxony on a former steel mill site. It took under a year to complete, with the first foundation stones being laid down last July.

SolarWorld says that with immediate effect, 6,000 "made in Germany" solar modules will be produced on a daily basis, thus taking the company’s nominal year-end capacities to a total of 1,400 MW.

"The very high manufacturing quality in Freiberg has for more than ten years been the guarantee for our tried and tested and repeatedly award-winning quality products. For this reason, we are deliberately sticking to Germany as our production location with its high environmental and social standards and are also keeping value creation in the country," commented Frank Asbeck.

Saxony Prime Minister Stanislaw Tillich added: "Today is an outstanding day for Saxony in several ways: SolarWorld AG is confirming its dedication to the location of Saxony thus securing and creating jobs in Freiberg in an important industry of the future. In addition, our mechanical engineering and plant construction companies have provided the equipment for the new production facilities."

The expansion of the production capacities was accompanied by the DIN certification of the test laboratories of SolarWorld Innovations GmbH. "This certification by the Association of Electrical, Electronic and Information Technology not least also ensures the high manufacturing quality of the new production plant," added Asbeck.
