The €50 million project was a joint venture between Getec green energy AG and the Romonta group. It started generating power on April 20 and is expected to supply 8,000 households annually. While Gero owns the plant, Getec and Romonta planned, developed and implemented it, Q.Cells SE worked as system integrator.

Commenting, Uwe Stieberitz, chairman of Romonta said, "The solar power plant has been constructed over 55 hectares of former opencast mines and slag heaps and represents another milestone in our long-term energy concept. Electrical generating capacity at Amsdorf is now around 120 megawatts, 75 megawatts of which originates from renewable sources."

The inauguration ceremony was held today, May 10 in Amsdorf, with Saxony-Anhalt prime minister, Reiner Haseloff. Commenting on the German government’s decision to reduce solar subsidy support, he said, "Companies, investors and those advancing research in this field all need a reliable framework in which to operate. That’s why I see the need for a drastic rethink on the cuts to solar power subsidies rashly agreed at the start of the year by the federal government."
