The 25 MW solar project will be powered by photovoltaic technology. GMR already has three operating projects with a cumulative capacity of 808 MWs and 11 other projects in the developmental phases adding up to 8,448 MW. The projects are all varied energy sources like thermal and gas. The GMR Group has been in the energy industry for the past eleven years and believes that green energy will help in maximising long term development impact and aid energy efficiency by reducing transmission and distribution loss to some degree, according to the company's spokesperson.

The Gujarat government has been ardently supporting solar power generation and is aiming to have a capacity of 3,000 MW in the next five years. Gujarat's chief minister Shri Narendra Modi has stated previously that he sees Gujarat emerging as a solar power hub in India.

The Gujarat government had also previously signed a memorandum of understanding with the U.S. based William J Clinton Foundation to set up five solar parks in the state with a cumulative power generation capacity of 3,000 MW. The memorandum was was signed by S. Jagadeesan, principal secretary of state energy department and Ira Magaziner, chairman of the Clinton Climate Initiative.
