Heraeus Photovoltaics has launched a regional product modification lab (PML) in Tokyo, further fortifying its existing network of regional research and development centers.

Expanding product modification capabilities in Japan allows Heraeus to more efficiently manage customer requirements, the leading PV metallization solutions supplier said in a statement released on Thursday.

A significant market for Heraeus, Japan represents more than 8% of the worldwide supply of solar cell manufacturing and 18% of global PV installations. The company’s network of regional product innovation abilities is essential for the company to keep up with the rapidly evolving technologies of its customers as Asia’s markets continue to grow.

“Our regional PML reinforces our strong commitment to Japan as a high technology market, adding to our strength as a reliable supplier of high quality products,” said Weiming Zhang, Heraeus’ senior VP of Innovation.

The company added that encouraging customer collaboration and accelerating R&D innovation in key regions were other factors in expanding its operations in Japan.

“By establishing our PMLs close to the markets, we are able to understand changes in our customers’ needs constantly and provide them with superior products in shortest response time,” Zhang said.

All of the company’s product modification labs work closely with the Heraeus Photovoltaic global R&D Center in the U.S. to ensure that the customer requirements are reflected in the development of products, according to the company.

The new Japanese site marks Heraeus’ third regional PML established in Asia in the last year. The company’s other PMLs opened in Shanghai and Taiwan last year.
