India and Chile to collaborate on solar development

According to the Indian government, Chile and India are gearing up to exchange their renewable energy knowledge. Solar energy is believed to be a particular focus.

The Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alfredo Moreno Charme and India’s Minister for New & Renewable Energy, Farooq Abdullah recently met in India to discuss how the two countries could cooperate on the development of renewable energy.

Along with other senior officials, the ministers reportedly discussed the progress India has made in the renewable energy field, particularly in the solar sector under its Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, and how expertise could be exchanged.

In a statement issued, the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy added that the Chilean delegation underlined the fact that power needs in the northern areas of Chile – where there are a number of mines – are expected to "increase sharply". "Dr. Abdullah suggested that solar energy could provide a major share of increased requirement of power and India would be willing to assist in this endeavor," said the statement.

Reportedly, Moreno Charme invited Abdullah to visit Chile "in the near future". It was further said the International Seminar on Energy Access, scheduled to be held in New Dehli this year would be the "ideal platform" for the two parties to discuss their cooperation plans.
