JA Solar, a Tier-1 Chinese solar company, has supplied its high-efficiency PV modules to an 11 MW solar-diesel hybrid project in Egypt.

The installation is being developed by Abu Dhabi’s Masdar and is the largest hybrid project of its type in North Africa.

Together with the diesel generation capacity, the installation is set to be 14 MW once completed, with solar PV providing the bulk of the power across four separate plants – Marsa Alam, Shalateen, Abu Ramad and Halayeb.

Located in the Red Sea region of the country, the project will deliver reliable and affordable power to tourism operations in the vicinity. Once completed, the hybrid power plant will provide power for more than 25,000 local households.

"Because the project is located in the desert and will experience extreme climatic conditions, it has stringent requirements for highly reliable modules," said JA Solar president Jian Xie. "Our winning bid demonstrates the high quality and reliability of our modules and the broad international recognition of our products."

Last week, Egypt extended the submission date for proposals to build a 200 MW solar PV plant in the West Nile district of the country as a result of red tape serving to complicated the application process, pv magazine reported last week.
