Japan: SMA will supply 70 MW project in Kagoshima City

The company has been selected as the sole inverter supplier for Japan's largest solar plant in Kagoshima City. The 70 MW power plant is expected to be completed by fall next year. SMA will be delivering a total of 140 Sunny Central 500CP-JP inverters that have been customized for the requirements of the Japanese market.

The JET certification (Japan Electrical Safety & Environment Technology Laboratories) is not necessary for utility-scale inverters. However SMA has put the Sunny Central 500CP-JP through similar JET tests.

Additionally SMA will deliver 1,260 Sunny String Monitors for the monitoring of the plant.

"Having been chosen by Kagoshima Mega Solar Power Corporation as the sole inverter supplier for Japan’s largest PV power plant represents yet another milestone for SMA in Japan. We will also start to sell our JET certified Sunny Boy inverters for rooftop installations this month," explained Pierre-Pascal Urbon, Speaker of the Managing Board and Chief Financial Officer for SMA.

"The introduction of a feed-in tariff for solar power three months ago and the decision of the government to phase out nuclear power by 2040 announced last month underline Japan’s desire to establish itself as a major market for photovoltaics worldwide. In the coming years, we expect strong growth in all market segments," he added.

SMA became the first European manufacturer to receive the JET certification for two inverters in June this year which enabled them to enter the Japanese market. SMA stated back then that it will be selling its Sunny Boy 3500TL-JP-22 and Sunny Boy 4500TL-JP-22 in Japan beginning October 2012.
