JinkoSolar awarded 188 MW in Mexico solar auction

Chinese solar company secures rights to develop three solar PV projects in Mexico’s inaugural tender auction.

Vertically integrated Tier-1 Chinese solar firm JinkoSolar has won 188 MWac of solar projects in Mexico’s inaugural tender auction, the company confirmed today.

JinkoSolar will develop and build three large-scale solar PV plants in the country, connecting each before mid-2018 and selling the solar power produced to Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) under 15-year PPAs. Each project will also receive clean energy certificates for a period of 20 years.

Two of the solar farms are to be located in Yucatan, with the other in the region of Jalisco. JinkoSolar did not reveal at what level of tariff the winning bids were secured for.

Company chairman Xiande Li called the winning bids a "milestone in JinkoSolar’s expansion into overseas projects", adding that the Chinese firm is eager to work with CFE and Mexico’s National Center for Energy Control to develop renewable energy in the country.

The very first Mexico clean energy auction was oversubscribed 15 times over, but the eventual revised results revealed that more than 4 GWh of solar energy projects were awarded, with an estimated 1.7 GWac across 11 projects now ready to be built at a median PV price of $45/MWh.
