Oriana Energy, a subsidiary of Sonnedix Group, in a partnership with Yarotek commenced work on a solar park in Puerto Rican Isabela at the beginning of March. Today, a Chinese solar panel manufacturer JinkoSolar announced that the company would supply almost 58 MW of PV modules for the project.
Greece-based EPC contractor Metka-Egn will build the plant and provide operation and maintenance services (O&M). JinkoSolar and METKA-EGN have collaborated on several different projects in various markets across the globe.
The PV plant in Isabela represents an investment of US$160 million. It is the largest solar project in the country. The farm is expected to generate 125,000 MWh annually, which is enough to satisfy the energy needs of over 12,000 households and offset 95,000 tones of CO2 emissions per year. The facility is set to go online by August 2016.
At the groundbreaking ceremony of the new PV plant in Isabela, developers introduced the project as the largest one in the Caribbean. This is however not accurate. Monte Plata PV farm in the Dominican Republic, once completed, is expected to reach the capacity of 67 MW. But if the Puerto Rican solar farm in Isabela is connected to the grid in August, it might well become the biggest operating solar plant in the region.
