Koyo to open PV panel factory in Tanzania

Share

It will officially open the subsidiary, Koyo Bussan Tanzania, in Dar es Salaam this week, according to an online statement.

It did not reveal additional details about the PV module plant, but said that it is interested in the commercial and residential solar sectors.

The Tokyo-based company, which specializes in solar and LED lighting, says it is committed to expanding access to electricity in Africa.

Koyo first announced plans to enter the Tanzanian energy market in May, when the local authorities revealed that the company planned to invest $1 billion in a 1GW gas-fired power plant in the country.

It started running its first PV project — a 1.3MW array in Nasu, in Japan’s Tochigi prefecture — in 2013.

It is now developing at least 50 projects in the country, according to its website.

It has participated in a number of solar projects outside of Japan, including a 70MW installation near Rovigo, Italy.
