LG expansion due to NeON being "almost sold out"

LG is pursuing a high-efficiency technology roadmap with its expansion to 1.8 GW of cell and module capacity at its Korean plant. The company confirmed with pv magazine today that all of the four new lines to be installed will be for n-type mono cells and busbarless interconnection technology.

"High efficiency is an inevitable key trend for rooftop segment," said LG in a statement.

LG has revealed that it will expand its cell and module capacity in step. One line will be added this year, with an additional four lines to be completed by 2018.

"The timeframe could be adjusted according to our market demand," LG noted. "We'll see when will be perfect."

On completion of the expansion to 1.8 GW, LG will have 400 MW of p-type mono cell production alongside 1.4 GW n-type mono. LG claims that because of this, its NeON 2 modules exhibit “almost no” Light Induced Degradation (LID).

All of the module assembly will deploy busbarless technology. LG brands its interconnection technology as Cello, which stands for Cell connection with Electrically Low loss, Low stress and Optical absorption enhancement.

LG is currently shipping its NeON module to the U.S. market, Europe, Japan and Australia and reports that it is “almost sold out” of the product.

The NeON 2 picked up an Intersolar Award last year, alongside REC’s TwinPeak Series module.
