The agency stated that the following companies have been selected to design, finance, build, operate and maintain the solar thermal plant in the southern city of Ouarzazate:
1. Abeinsa ICI, Abengoa Solar, Mitsui and Abu Dhabi NEC;
2. ENEL and ACS SCE ;
3. International Company for Water and Power (ACWA), Aries IS and TSK EE ; and
4. Orascom CI, Solar Millenium and Evonik Steag.
Masen went on to say that it will send the pre-qualified aplicants requests for proposals towards the end of January.
The first phase of the Ouarzazate solar complex will be based on concentrating solar power (CSP) parabolic trough technologies. Subsequent phases will be launched starting from 2011 and before the end of 2012, in order to achieve the target of 500 MWs in operation by 2015. At least one of these phases will reportedly be dedicated to photovoltaic technologies and another one to CSP tower technologies.
According to Reuters, Ouarzazate's 500 MW solar plant is the first in a national USD$9 billion solar power program that is projected to include five power stations to account for 38 percent of the country's installed power generation capacity by 2020.
