Italian PV manufacturer MegaCell has signed a co-development and licence agreement with RCT Solutions for bi-facial photovoltaic poly-cristalline technology.

MegaCell will start initial industrial production at its Carmignano di Brenta facility in Padua, Italy, early next year.

The company plans to use the technology for its expansion capacity project in Europe as well as for PV manufacturers interested in poly-cristalline bi-facial cells and modules.

MegaCell said the agreement represented a major step for the global PV sector "given the uniqueness of the polycrystalline PV Bi-facial solar cells technology."

MegaCell and RCT plan to work together in setting up other manufacturing units in countries where PV is booming and also transfer the know-how to players interested in expanding their product portfolios.

Describing MegaCell as "one of the leading qualified manufacturers that is concretely investing in state-of-the-art bi-facial polycrystalline technology," RCT CEO Peter Fath said the partnership would move the company's technology up "a massive production step."

With a cell efficiency of more than 18.3% and with the aim to exceed that in 2015, new polycrystalline bi-facial high-efficiency solar cells will have a bi-faciality ratio higher than 80%, according to MegaCell.
