Mexico's energy watchdog has greenlit a 33 MW PV project in eastern Chihuahua state.

The country's Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) in July approved the electricity generation permit for the 33 MW-AC installation requested by local company Rancho El Trece Solar PV, which will build the plant in mid-2015.

With a total capacity of 33.11 MW-AC, the installation will cover some 100 hectares (247 acres), employ single-axis tracker technology and is expected to use 137.952 PV modules of 240 W peak each.

The project, which is estimated to save more than 76,000 tons of CO2 emmissions annually, will generate 71.02 gigawatt hours a year and supply electricity to more than 34,000 homes.

SDC Energreen Aljaval, a joint venture between Mexico's Energreen and Spanish company Aljaval, is developing the project — one of a number of projects in Chihuahua that will likely be authorized by the CRE in the coming weeks.

Energreen is a subsidiary of Mexican sustainable energy group Desus, which has developed more than 100 MW of PV projects and is also involved in light efficiency and development and construction of biogas plants.

Aljaval has developed PV, wind and biomass projects in several countries, including Spain, Italy, South Africa, India and Chile. It has now established a beachhead in Mexico, where it working with local partners to develop more than 300 MW of ground-mounted and roof-top PV projects around the country.
