The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities approved on Wednesday a $446 million solar energy plan proposed by the Public Service Electric & Gas Co. (PSE&G).
The state's largest utility, PSE&G had sent a petition to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to extend its current Solar4All Program, according to a statement released by New Jersey state government on Wednesday.
The approved solar plan will provide $247 million to extend the Solar4All program, which aims to develop PV installations on unused landfills and abandoned industrial sites, through 2016. The Solar4All project comprises 42 MW of solar installations on landfills and former industrial sites as well as a further 3 MW of smaller projects.
In related news, a SEIA/GTM Research study released in March said that the state of New Jersey had reached 1 GW of installed cumulative photovoltaic capacity. In 2012, the state added a total of 415 MW of capacity.
It ranked third in the United States, after California and Arizona, for the amount of cumulative photovoltaic capacity installed and the amount installed in 2012, according to the report. The rankings leader California, added over 1.03 GW of photovoltaic capacity to the grid in 2012, while Arizona came in second with 710 MW.
