The company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices, Inc., has said it is deploying $8 million of capital equipment and investing an additional $4 million in facilities improvement and equipment relocation.

The 7,000 square meter facility will have an initial capacity of 15 MW, however, United Solar has said that it will ramp up to its full capacity of 30 MW "once higher market demand is established". The company will produce its thin film solar laminates there, specifically for the Ontario market.

The opening ceremony will take place today at 1.30 pm, and is expected to be attended by, among others, The Honourable Brad Duguid, Ontario Minister of Energy and MPP for Scarborough Centre, The Honourable Sandra Pupatello, Minister of Economic Development & Trade and MPP for Windsor West, His Worship Ken Antaya, LaSalle Mayor, and Bruce Crozier, MPP, Essex.

"United Solar’s investment is moving Ontario forward as a clean energy leader as we are becoming a destination point for renewable energy projects and manufacturing," commented The Honourable Brad Duguid, Minister of Energy.

"Projects like this are helping Ontario replace dirty, smog-producing coal, create thousands of jobs and leave a healthier future for our children and grandchildren."
