Another large Enel PV project has started production in an emerging solar market. Enel subsidiary Enel Green Power RSA (EGP RSA) was responsible for the completion of the project in South Africas Limpopo province, further consolidating the companys position in the country.
The Tom Burke PV power plant has an installed capacity of 66 MW, which is capable of generating up to 122 GWh per year. The energy from the plant will be sold to South African utility Eskom on a 20-year power purchase agreement.
With the completion of Tom Burke, Enel takes its installed capacity in South Africa to nearly 160MW, said Enel country manager in South Africa Lamberto Dai Pra. Furthermore, we have more than a gigawatt either recently awarded or already under construction, leveraging on the huge potential offered by this resource-rich country.
It is another landmark project in a big year for Enels PV sector, which has been expanding at an impressive rate in emerging solar markets. Just last month the company connected Latin Americas largest solar project to the grid, a 160 MW plant in the Antofagasta region of Chile, while in April the company began construction on a huge 158 MW solar plant in Brazil.
It is also building an impressive presence in South Africa, after recently beginning operations at the 82.5 MW Paleisheuwel PV power plant in the province of the Western Cape. The South African energy market is on the point of a very interesting evolution and we are developing an increasingly integrated presence in the country, added Dai Pra.
