Poland’s KGHM to produce solar cells
01. August 2012 | Markets & Trends, Applications & Installations | By: Jaroslaw AdamowskiPoland’s leading copper and silver miner, KGHM Polska Miedz has announced plans to produce solar cells, according to the company’s chief executive Hubert Wirth.
"We are looking for new niche markets," Wirth told local news agency Newseria. KGHM aims to recover tellurium to produce solar cells, he said.
According to the CE, the Polish company’s projects include designing a product range of innovative flexible solar cells. However, the chief executive did not disclose the amount of the latest investment.
KGHM says it is currently performing research and development works on the project in cooperation with the University of Science and Technology (AGH) in Krakow, Poland.
Founded in 1961 and headquartered in Lubin, Poland, KGHM is the country’s biggest mining business with some PLN 2 billion (€477 million) in assets. The company has a workforce of more than 28,000. In addition to copper and silver, KGHM’s product portfolio includes gold, lead, sulphuric acid and rock salt.
