Under the 10/10/10 Project, a worldwide effort that is run by the non-governmental organization, 350.org in a bid to reduce greenhouse gases, LG Electronics donated 48 modules to the Mulee Aage palace. The 240 watt modules will produce 11 kilowatts of solar power and are expected to save the palace more than US$300,000 over the lifetime of the solar panels.
The panels were installed the same week that President Barack Obama's office announced plans to install solar panels on the White House roofs. The Maldives is greatly hit by climate change, suffering regular water shortages and erosion of seashores. With rising sea levels threatening the country's survivial, President Mohamed Nasheed is setting the example and displaying his commitment towards combating climate change.
