PSE&G files to build 100 MW-DC more solar in New Jersey

Today Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) announced that it has filed a request with New Jersey regulators to expand its Solar 4 All program to build another 100 MW-DC of solar PV projects in its New Jersey service area.

The company plans to build the new solar projects on landfills and brownfields, and to complete the projects by the end of 2021. PSE&G notes that this would nearly triple the amount of landfill and brownfield solar that it owns in New Jersey, from 53 MW-DC at present.

PSE&G has built 115 MW-DC of the current 125 MW approved under Solar 4 All, including pole-attached units and eight utility-scale solar projects, which cover around 700,000 square meters of landfills and brownfields. PSE&G says that it has already identified sites for more of these projects.

“We have identified dozens of landfills in our electric service territory that would be prime candidates for solar development, so the approval of the requested Solar 4 All extension would allow us to return even more of these sites to good use by building grid connected solar farms on land that would otherwise have very limited development options,” notes SDG&E VP of Renewables and Energy Solutions Courtney McCormick.

Like many utilities, PSE&G has a preference for utility-scale PV such as it is building on these waste sites, estimating that these are around 40% less expensive than typical residential net metering projects.
