Qatar: Solar program delayed

Qatar has stated that its expansion plans for solar power is being held up by certain issues like the scale of the projects planned and the dust that blows in from the desert areas.

Qatar Solar Technologies is one of the main companies involved in Qatar's solar projects.

Bloomberg reports that the former Energy Minister who is also the chairman of Qatar Electricity and Water Co. said at a press conference today that there are some technology problems delaying the progress of the projects but he is a "big believer that technology will solve it". Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah also added that Qatar is one of the biggest believers in solar power.

Since Qatar's projects will cover vast areas, careful planning is called for. "W are receiving a lot of dust from the frontier areas, and the dust is one of the challenges. It reduces sharply the efficiency of solar," he added.

Qatar is seeking to use solar power as a component to meet its 20% renewable energy goal by 2030.  An announcement was made by 2012 UN Climate Change Conference Organising Sub-Committee Chairman H.E. Fahad Mohamed Al-Attiya, that Qatar will generate 1.8 Gigawatts  of solar power by 2014 as part of the vision to generate 20% of the country’s total energy needs through renewable sources.Qatar Solar Technologies (QSTec) is one of the key organisations involved in meeting this goal, already laying ground for a polysilicon facility last year.
