REC to supply 120 MW of TwinPeak modules to Sunrun

The U.S. market is continuing to deliver strong demand to the REC Group, with the latest deal demonstrating appetite for its high efficiency 280W TwinPeak Series module. The deal will see between 120 – 150 MW REC TwinPeak modules shipped to Sunrun in 2016.

The deal comes after REC having shipped over 100 MW of modules to Sunrun in 2015.

In its Q3 2015 results, REC reported that the U.S. is proving a particularly strong end market for its modules. 60% of total module sales in Q3 2015 came from the U.S., totaling around 200 MW of capacity.

When announcing the Q3 2015 results, REC’s president for sales and marketing Luc Graré told pv magazine that its strong U.S. performance is being partly driven by tariffs on Chinese modules, from which it is exempt due to its Singaporean production base. The TwinPeak series, Graré continued, was performing well in the market.

“That [the TwinPeak series] is very well received and actually we are working on expanding the production capacity of that product, because there is more demand than we can produce at the time being,” said Graré. REC currently has capacity to produce 100 MW of Twin Peak modules annually at present, and is looking to expand that to between 170 – 190 MW in 2016.

Given this production capacity, it appears likely that much of REC’s TwinPeak production will now be consumed by Sunrun alone in 2016. REC’s U.S. business development vice president Zony Chen said that the Sunrun partnership demonstrates the confidence installers have with its product.

“Because of strong customer interest in REC’s award-winning TwinPeak Series panels, we are ramping additional production capacity at our Singapore manufacturing facility to meet the growing demand,” said Chen in a statement.

“Using high-quality and reliable panels in home solar projects is an important part of creating a great customer experience, and we’re pleased to be working with a reputable partner like REC Group,” added Sunrun’s COO Paul Winnowski.

The REC TwinPeak series was awarded a 2015 Intersolar award, due to its combination of a number of cell and module innovations, including PERC technology, half-cut cells, four busbar cell interconnection, and split junction box design.
