Two leading solar players in the Indian and Chinese PV markets have worked together to commission this week a 72 MW solar PV plant in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
Indian clean energy developer ReNew Power formed a joint venture with Chinese solar module maker Hareon Solar to build and connect the solar project, which is located across two districts in the state, Kurnool and Prakasam.
Awarded as part of a bidding process held in late 2014, the 72 MW project is part of a wider 619 MW tender of capacity awarded by two distribution utilities in the state, namely Southern Power Distribution Company Limited of Andhra Pradesh, and Eastern Power Distribution Company.
The former utility has signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for the energy provided by the solar project, which is expected to generate 115 million units of energy per year. Hareon Solar provided its high efficiency multi-crystalline silicon solar modules for the development, marking a definitive foray into the growing Indian solar market.
"Hareon Solar has invested and commissioned more than 1 GW of PV projects across seven countries, and has announced several long-term investments in India, including PV power plants and high efficiency solar cell manufacturing," Hareon Solars VP of global business development Jie Zhang said.
For ReNew Power, the completion of this solar project marked 2.5 GW of commissioned or under-construction clean energy assets in India, the company confirmed. Backed by Goldman Sachs, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and the Asian Development Bank, ReNew Power is currently working on 286 MW of solar capacity in Telangan, 180 MW of PV in Karnataka, and a further 522 MW of solar in the state of Jharkhand.
