Chinas PV industry is adept at racking up records in terms of production capacity, speed of PV deployment and now with a truly massive solar carport structure. The project indicates that distributed solar, albeit on a grand scale, are becoming more common in Chinas downstream market that remains dominated by utility scale projects.
Construction on the first 20 MW stage of the Risen Energy carport project began in the first half of this year, the company reports. It is located at Shanghai Volkswagen Ningbo Branch and will shelter employee parking.
The carport project will deploy Risen 255W modules and will provide cover for 20,000 cars. Risen claims it to be the largest BIPV project globally.
Risen notes that Hangzhou Bay, which is situated to the south of Shanghai, is aspiring to become a low carbon city and attract knowledge based and technology industries under the label wisdom city.
Previously the largest solar carport facility was a 10 MW array located at the Saudi Aramco offices in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Supplied by Solar Frontier and designed and built by Belectric, the project was completed in 2011.
Risen has announced when its 55 MW carport array will be completed.
