Schott Solar will stop crystalline PV production in Mainz

Germany’s Wormser Zeitung has reported that the supervisory board made the decision at a meeting held today, June 28. Around 870 employees are expected to be affected. It is still unclear, however, what the production closure will mean for the employees.

Meanwhile, the production of Schott’s receivers for solar thermal plants is expected to be continued, added the newspaper. No one at Schott could be contacted to confirm the news.

In recent months, the company has successively scaled back its involvement in the German photovoltaic sector. Initially, it closed down its module production in Alzenau and wafer manufacturing operations in Jena. In doing this, around 600 jobs were lost.

In the future, Schott is only expected to continue on with the product development of its high efficiency cells and modules in Germany. Additionally, it has increased its presence in the project development business.
